Holiday season travel and the role of robots

In the wake of the worst pandemic in the last 100 years that brought the aviation industry to a halt, airports and airlines around the world are looking to reboot the industry and welcome back passengers.

With holiday travel quickly approaching, there will be the usual influx of passengers moving through airports as they travel to visit family and friends. Although the number of total passengers will be drastically reduced from previous years, traveler safety is still paramount.

Airports and airlines are doing everything they can to ensure the health and safety of passengers, as well as employees and partners, helping to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Many leading airports and airlines have begun implementing innovative solutions to help. In our recent webinar, Brian Cobb, Chief Innovation Officer from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, Karim Benani from Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, and Joe Petrie from Airport Business joined Jeff Schrantz from Avidbots to discuss these solutions further.

In addition to social distancing protocols, limiting people in the airport to travelers only, and implementing strict cleaning protocols, airports are using robots for a variety of tasks. These include delivering goods, providing a contactless experience, and cleaning and sanitization.

Many airports around the world, like the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, are using Neo, the truly autonomous floor scrubbing robot. In fact, five of the top ten airports are automating floor care with Neo.

Benefits of deploying Neo at an airport include…

  • A superior autonomous clean and sanitization
  • Reallocating housekeeping efforts to high-touch surfaces
  • Decreasing the exposure to workforce issues and litigation
  • Increasing cleaning productivity
  • Enhancing the transit or airport terminal’s public image
  • Providing highly detailed reporting for a measurable clean

At Changi Airport in Singapore, they have a fleet of Neos autonomously cleaning many terminals.

To date, Neo has autonomously cleaned more airport terminal flooring than any other robot — almost 500 million square feet! This number will only continue to grow as airports continue to add Neo to their housekeeping teams.

This holiday season, passengers can trust that airports and airlines are doing their best to keep them safe and healthy. Neo is another way airports are using all of the tools available to them in the fight against COVID-19.
